So this is my first blog on my website and something that I am really into at the moment is Intermittent Fasting.
When I tell people I am fasting every day, they quite often seem shocked and think I'm nuts. But It's quite interesting the way this all came about.
I had a few people around me earlier this year who were doing the 5/2 diet and when I looked into it. the fasting part stood out. I researched it and found many people from many varied dietry focuses were intermittent fasting. I found someone who does a Keto focused diet with daily fasting and doctors who talk about intermittent fasting and why it works and I also follow someone who's dietry focus is Raw and intermittent fasting. I have found a Chef I love who has helped me really start to enjoy cooking again and I have lost 12kgs so far in 3 months, with no exercise as the weather in Melbourne isn't great at the moment and in the beginning I found it took a while for my bodies energy to adjust. So I will share with you the changes I have made and what I have learned and will give you some people to look up to do your own research. If you want to discuss any of it further with me contact me through Facebook. I am happy to discuss with anyone who is interested in their health.
My intermittent fasting is the 16/8 fasting which means I don't eat after 7.30 - 8pm each night and I don't eat when I wake. I have clear herbal tea in the morning or warm lemon water and I go to work and don't eat until 11.30am - 12pm. I do this every day. Saying that, it is flexible. Some Sunday mornings my husband and I go out for breakfast or brunch and it may be earlier but I just stop eating earlier that day. I find this great as it is more flexible than most diets and there is much less guilt because of that so you have less rebound or disaster days because each day is a new start. Plus I think if people have success with only fasting 2 days a week on the 5/2 diet then one or two days that don't work for fasting isn't a big deal.
I eat from 12 - 8pm and I try to eat as clean as possible. I still eat treats I just make them at home and they are usually raw healthy treats.
I also drink a lot more water than I use to. Drinking a good amount of water is the hardest thing for me and something I have to do very consciously. But believe me, when I do, it makes such a massive difference. The right amount that is recommended is 1 Litre of water for every 22kg of body weight. Drinking water obviously helps to hydrate our bodies but it also help to eliminate the toxins and excess waste from our bodies. Which is very necessary which I will explain soon.
Intermittent fasting and extended fasting lowers your blood glucose and helps to eliminate excess fat and proteins from the body. The way that it does this is by putting our bodies into ketosis and also triggering the autophogy / Autolysis process.
Ketosis occurs when people eat a low- or no-carb diet and molecules called ketones build up in their bloodstream. Low carbohydrate levels cause blood sugar levels to drop and the body begins breaking down fat to use as energy.
Autophogy or Autolysis or Apoptosis is, more commonly known as self-digestion, refers to the destruction of a cell through the action of its own enzymes. It may also refer to the digestion of an enzyme by another molecule of the same enzyme. Which means that if your body is deprived of proteins, the body uses proteins within the body that is already in cells that are redundant or usless. So it's not going to take it from your muscles or vital organs or running system of the body. But it will seek out lumps and bumps in the body like cysts and moles, cancer cells etc that are all made up of fats and proteins and decontruct them and use what it needs from them and eliminate the rest. It's amazing and the best explanations I have found on this is from Dr Jason Fung. There are many video's on YouTube by him that explains the whole process. There is also Dr Michael Mosley.
Our bodies are quite amazing with what it can do. Unfortunately we bog our system down with too much food or crap food and it can't do what it does naturally which is renew and regenerate itself.
So by fasting each day and allowing our body to finish the renewal process. The body has 3 functions it runs in 8 hour windows.
4 AM - 12 PM Elimination
12 PM - 8 PM Appropriation
8 PM - 4 AM Assimilation
So If we use intermitent fasting in line with these functions we assist the body to do what it does naturally.
I love this stuff so much as I find it to be an easy way to lose weight and your body feels so much better and craves better food. It also tells you when it doesn't feel like certain types of food. When your body is not bogged down with processing crap food, it's much easier to hear what it's telling you. And boy does good food taste amazing once you start this.
As I have said, feel free to PM me on Facebook to discuss further or if you would like coaching in this area I'm happy to help you with that.
All the best
